Bacteria Loading Index and their Antibiotics Susceptibility Profiles from Accident Victims at Nsukka Health Care Centre, Nsukka, Enugu State Nigeria

Medically important bacteria remain a global public heath burden and threat to health security since the discovery of antibiotics and its application in therapeutics in human health and surrounding ecosystem. This cross-sectional study was carried out at Nsuk- ka health centre, a rural hospital at Nsukka, ethical approval (HREC/ESHB/2024) was obtained from the health research ethical committee Enugu State health board. This study was conducted on accident victims with wound aged women receiving post-sur- gery treatments. Wound swabs from different wounds of the accident victims were inoculated on to blood agar and MacConkey (Oxoid UK), incubated aerobically at 37°C overnight. Antibiotic susceptibility was done on Mueller Hinton agar (Oxoid UK) using the modified Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method according to the Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Strains of bacteria collected (using both nutrient and differential media), out of the 137 organisms, 98 (71.53%) were gram negative bacteria (on gram staining). Air-borne Staphylococcus spp. 21 (15.32%) was the predominant isolates among all the gram positive bacteria. While Escherichia spp. was the most predominant bacteria isolates in all the patients 46 (33.57%). Escherichia spp. was sensitive to antibiotics family of ofloxacin: ciprofloxacin (87.3%), enrofloxacin (72.3%); Staphylococcus spp. was sensitive to rifampicin (67%) and vancomycin (71.2%). Strains of Salmonella and Klebsiella spp. were sensitive to ciprofloxacin (71.1%) and linezolid + chlortetra- cycline hydrochloride (63.4%) respectively.
