Effective communication is essential for optimal functioning within specialty nursing care units, where it influences team dynamics, nurse well-being, and healthcare delivery. This article examines the communication climate in these units, highlighting the distinction between defensive and supportive climates. Defensive communication, often marked by threats to self-image and a lack of openness, can hinder collaboration, escalate conflict, and undermine care outcomes. In contrast, a supportive climate fosters trust, openness, and mutual respect, leading to enhanced teamwork and improved patient care. The article also explores the impact of interpersonal barriers, including generational, gender, and status differences, which contribute to communication challenges. Furthermore, the article discusses Gibb’s (1961) Defensive Communication Climate Model, offering a framework for understanding and improving communication behaviours within nursing teams. Nurse managers play a pivotal role in creating and maintaining a supportive climate by promoting transparency, active listening, and addressing barriers to effective communication. The article concludes by emphasising the importance of cultivating a supportive communication climate to enhance both nurse satisfaction and patient outcomes.
